THE CLIENT
First Commonwealth Federal Credit Union
With more than $115 million in assets, First Commonwealth Federal Credit Union is the largest credit union in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. It serves 12,000 members, including major accounts such as AT&T and Bell Laboratories. 

THE CHALLENGE:
The credit union's doors opened in January of 1959, and since then, has been providing all the services that a bank would, such as handling credit cards, mortgages, IRAs, wire transers and Christmas Club accounts. 

All these activities generate a multitude of paper. For example, the Consumer Lending Department must maintain a separate file for each of the 6,000 loans that are outstanding. Misfiles were becoming a problem.

Color-Coded System Eliminates Misfiles
TAB® invented CompuColor, an innovative filing system that substitutes colors for numbers. Each Compu-Color file is coded with a series of color bars, and the color of each bar has a numerical equivalent.

This system virtually eliminates misfiles, since employees can spot mistakes immediately.  The color-coding system makes out-of-place files instantly apparent by breaking their surrounding color block with an obvious slash of the wrong color.  Overall TAB's CompuColor system cuts filing recognition time by 40%.

No More "Monster Drawers"
Before turning to TAB, First Commonwealth stored their records in "big monster drawers" that were "huge and heavy" according to Diane Williams, Assistant Vice President of Consumer Lending. Today First Commonwealth stores their color-coded files in 7-high cabinets. The Spacefinder Cabinet has a very small footprint, only 13 1/2" deep, creating a vast capacity for filing. This 36" wide cabinet saves more than half the expensive floor space required by many cabinets for the same number of records.

TAB-Trac®
In addition to the cabinets, First Commonwealth also uses a mechanical assist TAB-Trac® Mobile Filing system to house paper and office supplies.  This provides high density storage and filing without taking up a lot of space.
